2013 Year End Post | Beaches, Hikes and Everything Nice

Time flies so fast. Parang kahapon, kakasimula lang ng 2013, pero ngayon matatapos na siya, napakabilis. Napakaraming naganap, masasaya, exciting, nakakapagod, nakakakilig, nakakabusog at marami pang iba. Marami rin bagong karanasan at bagong taong nakasalamuha. Overall, my 2013 was a blast!

So before the year ends, here's a run down of my adventures this 2013.

January
6 Mt. Cristobal Traverse
13 Mt. Marami hike
17-20 Mt. Talomo-Apo Megatraverse
21-22 Samal Island
24-27 Mt. Dulang-Dulang-Kitanglad (D2K traverse)

After completing the physically demanding Talomo-Apo Megatraverse, I headed to Bukidnon to do the D2K Traverse. Oh, it's one of my greatest traverses.

Top Ten Captured Moments of 2013

Most memorable moments of the year captured in photos

10. At the rim
Mt. Bulusan
Bulusan, Sorsogon
April 7, 2013

Many thinks that getting near an active volcano is a crazy idea. But hey, we were at the rim of Bulusan Volcano's crater. Certainly a memorable hike.

Mt. Tagapo | Return to Isla Talim

The itch of returning to Isla Talim and climb its grassy peak came bugging me again. There's no particular reason why I wanted to climb again Mt. Tagapo, namiss ko lang talaga siya bigla. But unlike before, which was a solo hike, I wanted to bring a gang with me this time.

Mt. Makiling | MakTrav Again... and Again

Ask me to join your Mt. Makiling hike (lalo na kung MakTrav) and I might find it hard to turn you down. It is my favorite training ground, the mountain of choice to catch up with my hiking. Not to mention, it has a special place in my heart.

Nasugbu Twin Hike And Some Pointers in Doing a Double Dayhike

I joined the hike because I thought it would be my first Nasugbu Trilogy Hike, but circumstances tells me not to push for the third mountain (Pico de Loro). The would-be Nasugbu Trilogy ended up for me as another Nasugbu Twin Hike (Batulao and Talamitam). Something I did a little more than a month ago.

Saturday - June 6, 2013

Aboard a bus bound for Nasugbu, Batangas, I was thinking, "kakayanin ko ba ang Nasugbu Trilogy challenge, Batulao-Talamitam-Pico De Loro?, may MakTrav pa ako kinabukasan!" With a mindset ready for the three mountain challenge, I sat comfortably at my seat, and soon fell asleep. The next thing I knew, we're almost at Evercrest.

Mt. Cristobal | I Still See No Devil

Many mountaineers claim that they've experienced something "devilish" either on the trails or the campsites of Mt. Cristobal (or Mt. San Cristobal), hence the moniker "Devil's Mountain"... but of the three hikes I did in this mountain, ni minsan, hindi ako nakaramdam ng takot o pangamba na makakaengkwentro ko ang mga "evil spirits".

To be honest, na-eexcite ako laging umakyat sa Mt. Cristobal because it has one of the most varied and interesting flora among the Tagalog mountains, comparable to Makiling and Malipunyo range.

Mt. Maculot | Traversing Once Again

When we did the Grotto-Summit-Rockies traverse of Mt. Maculot December of 2012, it was against the rule. Traversing Mt. Maculot from the grotto side has been prohibited indefinitely by the barangay that has jurisdiction over that area. I asked them why, they said the ropes on the trail have become too frail (pero nung nakita ko, hndi naman tlga). It just so happened that it was our lucky day, the local officials allowed us to traverse after pleading for like 5 minutes.

Six months after my first Mac-Trav, I found myself doing the same thing again, hoping that our charm would work for the second time.

Five Great European Climbs

There’s nothing better than feeling the breeze on your face when you’re climbing up the side of a steep mountain or rock. Rock climbing is an extreme sport that, though tough, welcomes beginners as there are countless locations around the world suited to all levels and abilities. Here are five of the best hikes and climbs in Europe:

The King’s Trail, Lapland

This hiking trail is one of Sweden’s most popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. At more than 400km-long, the trail contains so many different hikes that it would be impossible not to find a few suited to yourself. More commonly known as the home of Santa Claus, the alpine environment engulfs what Lapland trips are all about and in the winter you can even bring your cross-country skis for use along the trail.

Chamonix, France

Rock climbing in Chamonix gives you ample opportunity to test your skills. There are a number of well-known crags, including Barberine, Servoz, La Joux and Gaillands that all feature the beauty that is the Chamonix Valley. These crags offer a variety of challenges so pick the ones that suit your ability best or, for added assistance, climb with an instructor. For experienced climbers, and those after a particular challenge, there is the Mont Blanc climb. This 4,810m high mountain is the highest in the Alps and to summit it is a true challenge.

Costa Blanca, Spain

If you’re planning a rock climbing trip for the autumn or winter, consider the limestone rock climbs you can do in Costa Blanca. The weather during this time of year is comfortable, even sunny, but not too hot and you can find affordable flights here from many cities in the UK or Europe. The Calpe Area, in particular, is a beautiful, scenic climb up cliffs near the sea.

Western Swiss Alps, Switzerland

The Alps include countless climbs but the Western Swiss Alps in particular are a must-climb. This region includes limestone rock with both single and multiple-pitch routes and the high altitude can give you an added challenge. You can have your pick of climbs on the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch mountains as they are all in this spectacular region of natural beauty.

Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany

This gorgeous national park, located in southeast Germany, includes a pristine natural lake, Königssee, with countless hiking trails surrounding it. You can hike high in the Bavarian Alps to look down on the serenity that is Königssee. The park has a change in altitude of more than 2,000 meters so you’re sure to see a variety of landscapes and wildlife as you hike up and down the trails.

Thus, there’s no need to travel far to experience some of the best hikes and climbs the world has to offer. These five destinations alone prove Europe’s the place to be for challenging, scenic and worthwhile climbs.

Anniversary Post | Three Years of Adventures

Anyway...

Mt. Batulao | Dark Sky Over the Greens

That was fast. The blue sky that brought smile to us in Mt. Talamitam (read my previous hike in Mt. Talamitam) just suddenly turned to grey. Kaasar! But that won't stop us from completing the day's mission—a twin day hike of Talamitam and Batulao.

______________________________________________________________________________

Sunday - May 26, 2013

Straight from Mt. Talamitam, we traveled by jeep back to Evercrest (P13) for Mt. Batulao. There was no sign, at first, that the weather would turn against us so we just took things slow and steady. Kung baga e, petiks lang kami. We even had lunch first at a nearby carideria before breaking into the trails.

walkathon towards the jumpoff. Sobrang init, sinong mag-aakala na may parating na bugso ng ulan?

Mt. Talamitam | Up the Teletubbyland

The idea of hiking up Mt. Talamitam was brought about by the fact that I haven't climbed it yet. That's true, Mt. Talamitam was among the few Tagalog peaks that my itchy feet haven't touched yet (until this hike). The time has finally come, maaakyat ko na ang Talamitam.

Mt. Makiling | Not a Maktrav

Quite unexpected, it's not a MakTrav

_______________________________________________________________________

Saturday - May 25, 2013

I decided to join Doc Gideon in his supposedly Makiling Traverse (MakTrav) via Sipit-UPLB on a Saturday. At first, I thought it's gonna be wet and slippery hike as I can see from bellow the gathering of clouds around the summit area, but as soon as we began our trek, it disseminated. The sky perfectly cleared up, rendering a scenic view of the nearby mountains and lowlands. A great day!

Limatiks still greeted us with ferocity, particularly in the Melkas area, despite the very sunny day. Oh well, a hike in Mt. Makiling will never be complete without them.

Buntot Palos | Yet Another Waterfall Escapade

What else could battle the intense summer heat better than a cool waterfall escapade nearby? Considering our limited time and budget, we cannot simply escape into the coveted heights of the Cordilleras (kahit gustuhin pa namin). Good thing, Laguna, a province so blessed with many of this wonderful waterform, is just there nearby, reachable in a matter of a few hours drive. So we thought, Buntot Palos in Pangil, Laguna should be the day's destination.

I quickly consulted the internet to see how it looks (Buntot Palos isn't really known widely, unlike its neighbor waterfall in Pagsanjan). Then wow, the tall waterfall, which happens to be a namesake of a slimy fish, easily captivated my eager spirit. Its stunning beauty called us, made us want to actually see it right before our eyes. Another awesome adventure with the Tramping Philippines is on the way.

Mt. Pulag | The Challenge and Beauty of Akiki and Tawangan

"When we were trekking Akiki Trail last weekend, I was mumbling, 'bakit ba ako nagpapakahirap ng ganito kung meron namang Ambangeg Trail? (why do I have to suffer this when there's an easier Ambangeg trail)' Oh, Akiki Trail, you're so worthy to be called 'the killer trail of Pulag'. Tawangan Trail, on the other hand, is totally different, simply mesmerizing."
This was my FB status upon returning home from our 2-day Pulag Traverse via Akiki-Tawangan. It felt so great, to experience both the challenge and beauty of Mt. Pulag's trails in just one go. As my mentor has pointed out, Mt. Pulag Traverse via Akiki-Tawangan is one of the best hiking experiences in the Philippines, but certainly not for the weak (should you do it in just two days).

Mt. Kalisungan-Atimla | Traversing the Twin Mountains of Laguna

Now that Mang Bino, the famous guide from Calauan, has finally finished connecting the networks of trails that exist on both Mt. Kalisungan and Mt. Atimla, traversing these two adjacent mountains is now possible. I heard this good news from Doc Gideon as he shared his plan on hiking the twin mountains that lay on the border of the towns Calauan, San Pablo and Nagcarlan in Laguna on Labor Day. And of course, I showed great interest in joining him in this hike.

Mt. Romelo | For the Love of Rambutan, Lansones and Cascading Waters

Isn't it nice, that after exactly one year, I returned to Mt. Romelo to hike again its muddy trails and visit again its hidden gems—the waterfalls? That's right, a Sunday packed with muddy, dirty, fun adventure on, not one, not two, but three of Mt. Romelo's waterfalls!

San Jose Circuit | My Least Favorites

If there's a mountain (or mountains) which I would consider my least favorite, then definitely it's the mountains of San Jose, Tarlac, namely Mt. Kawayan, Mt. Bungkol Baka and Mt. Tangisan. Our experience there was somewhat unexciting, monotonous and quite unremarkable. Never again shall I repeat that hike. Please don't get me wrong ha, the mountains there are beautiful enough and still worthy of a climb, it's just that we really had a bad experience hiking those mountains. As much as possible, I want to see how each mountain differs from one other. I usually don't climb mountains just to say I climbed that mountain. But sadly, in this hike, oh man, it felt like that.

Warning: If you don't want to read excessive whining and grouchiness about the mountains of San Jose, please leave this page immediately.

Heritage of the Sugarland | Ancestral Houses of Silay

My solo wandering in the sugarland continued with a visit to Silay City, home of the 20+ well preserved ancestral houses of wealthy, politically influential (national level) families and renowned artists and intellectuals. Oh man, if you have a heart for history and culture, brace yourself as this post is quite too overwhelming!

Heritage of the Sugarland | The Ruins of Talisay

Who would have thought that the remains of the once illustrious mansion would one day rise again to become one of Negros' most iconic landmark. Ah, the Ruins of Talisay. When I visited Negros Occidental, I made sure I won't miss it.

Bacolod City | The Taste of Authentic Chicken Inasal

In the Philippines, who's not familiar with Bacolod's very own style of chicken barbecue? With the unique flavor brought by the local marinade and, of course the grill, it easily captured the hearts of most Filipinos.

The swift mushroom-like expansion of Mang Inasal fast food chain in Metro Manila and in many parts of the county, however, makes this Ilonggo dish very common, so common that you can easily find it at every corner of the streets in Metro Manila or in every poblacion in every town in the provinces. And I take this negatively as it kills authenticity of the dish.

That's why when I set foot in Bacolod city (birthplace of the dish), one of my objectives was to taste the original Chicken Inasal.

Mambukal Resort | A Post Climb Relaxation

Something that I really look forward to as soon as we finished our 3-day traverse hike on Mt. Kanlaon, is this relaxing resort right at the mountain's foot. Well, it's every hiker's (those who are doing Guintubdan-Wasay Traverse on Mt. Kanlaon) destiny to visit the place as it is, actually, the traverse's endpoint. So, kung nandun na rin lang, might as well just visit the place.

Mt. Kanlaon | Guintubdan to Wasay Volcano Adventure

These volcanic adventures is getting more and more exciting as we go from one volcano to another. Just a week after climbing Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon, me and my friends flew to Negros Island to once again experience the geological wonders of a volcano. Mt. Kanlaon, an active volcano in the Island of Negros and the highest in Visayas, was our destination—my 40th mountain, and 3rd in my volcano quest.

Mt. Bulusan | Long Live the Volcano

In the world of Philippine mountaineering, active volcanoes such as Mayon, Pinatubo, Kanlaon, Taal, Bulusan, and a lot more (remember that the Philippine Islands sit prettily on the Pacific Ring of fire, thus active volcanoes abound) are just too interesting to ignore. Characterized by having a landscape that is varying and constantly being altered by its activities, these Earth vents have truly aroused my lust for adventure. Those wide craters, hot boiling springs, steaming vents and yellowish sulfuric terrains found on its surface really makes me want to visit a volcano, not to mention, volcanoes are also a haven of unusual ecosystems.

When I hiked Mt. Pinatubo last January 2012 and saw the lake that has accumulated on its caldera, I was simply stunned. It's really incredible, a geologic wonder, not doubt. Since then, I included the Philippine Volcanoes in my ever increasing bucketlist of must-climb mountains.

Well, for some reasons, it was only last April 2013 (after a year and three months) that I managed to climb again a volcano, and once again, I was totally blown away by the experience. Mt. Bulusan, an active volcano in the province of Sorsogon (last known eruption happened in 2010), is the second in my volcano quest.

Nagsasa Cove | A Quickie Beach Side Trip

Spending some time on a beach is probably the nicest, most rewarding activity to do after a long, hot, energy-draining trek on a mountain.

________________________________________________________________________________

Sunday - March 24, 2013

It really makes me happy that after spending hours trekking on the rugged steeps of  Mt. Balingkilat, under the heat of the midday sun, our team finally reached Nagsasa Beach. It's been a while since I last visited the place (an account of my 2012 trip in Nagsasa in this link). Almost none have changed, it is still the same beautiful, less commercialized beach that I always wanted.

after a long tiring hike in Mt. Balingkilat, we're finally having a laid-back afternoon at Nagsasa Beach.

Mt. Balingkilat | Traverse to Nagsasa Cove

To climb Mt. Balingkilat, or any mountain on that side of Luzon, on a hot summer day can be suicidal. The mountain will slowly drain your life away, every ATP you have in storage will be consumed, every fluid in your body will perish until you end up like a tuyo (dried fish).

Ok, I may be exaggerating now. But hey, that's what we felt when we climbed this mountain three months ago.

Sombrero Island | Beach After Climb

Anilao, aside from Mt. Gulugod Baboy, is also very well known for its wonderful dive sites and nearby island beaches. That's why when our Mt. Gulugod Baboy day hike was still on planning stage, I questioned myself, "Why settle for hiking Mt. Gulugod Baboy alone, when there's an island beach just stone's throw away?" That's right folks, a quick hike on Mt. GB coupled with a trip on an island beach is just the perfect thing to do on a hot summer day.

Mt. Gulugod Baboy | A Retreat from the Majors

Amidst my undying desire to reach for higher and more challenging mountains, an inner voice keeps reminding me not to forget those low, beginner-friendly peaks nearby. Nakaka-miss din ang mga minor climbs ng Southern Tagalog. Actually, it's been a while since I last climbed a minor mountain. All these major climbs that I've been doing in the past 3 months is, somewhat, tiring. Tama, napapagod din akong umakyat!  So I thought, a break from all these is what I need, an easy hassle-free minor climb. I should climb Mt. Gulugod Baboy!

Faro de Cabo Engaño

Faro de Cabo Engaño is one of the lighthouses built by the Spanish Government in the late 19th century. Given that it was built in the island of Palaui in the northeastern tip of Luzon, the main purpose of this farola is to guide the ships coming from the vast Pacific Ocean into Babuyan Channel.

Palaui Island | A Piece of Paradise Up North

Off the coast of the northeastern tip of Luzon, in the province of Cagayan, lies Palaui Island. It's an island people would visit for pristine beach, Batanes-like landscape, and a century old lighthouse. Without a doubt, it is a great place!

How great? Well, dito lang naman gaganapin ang season 27 ng Survivor. That's right, the island has attracted the whole crew of the reality game show and they're now rolling season 27 of Survivor Series, how cool is that? Haist, buti na lang napuntahan ko kagad ang Palaui Island bago isara para sa shooting ng Survivor. Yes, I was there last February, and I've seen and experienced for myself this piece of paradise.

Mt. Arayat | Yet Another Traverse

No man has ever hiked the same mountain twice, for in every hike, the experience is never repeated.
If you're a constant reader of this blog, then you know for sure that Mt. Makiling (a MakTrav dayhike) is the blogger's personal favorite. But did you know that there's a mountain up north that gives an equivalent thrill as MakTrav? If Mt. Makiling is to south, for me, Mt. Arayat is to north. I don't think I will ever get tired of hiking both Makiling and Arayat, my favorite mountains, my training grounds.

Last Sunday (Jun 2, 2013), I did a traverse, yet again, on Mt. Arayat — same route (Magalang to Arayat). Well, it never gets old, the excitement, fun and thrill that I felt more than a year ago during my first Arayat Traverse is exactly the same feelings that I felt on my fourth.

Dream Summits

I'm addicted to mountains. At this point of time, I can no longer imagine my life without putting myself into action on the trails, the wilderness, and the summits. Week after week, there's an urge for climbing a mountain.

When I climbed my first mountain in the year 2011, I made Mt. Apo, the highest in the country, my ultimate goal. Came January 2013, and that goal has already been achieved (hurrah, an account of my Mt. Apo adventure in this link). At first, I thought I would stop climbing after I reached the highest peak, but no, my love for the mountains did not end [will never end] there. Days after the success of that climb, I started to crave for more mountains. The notion "I've done the highest, what's stopping me from climbing the rest" simply gives me the morale, enough reason not to stop venturing into other Philippine mountains.

Mt. Maculot | A New Trail

For having a very picturesque rockies summit, a beginner friendly trail, and an easily commutable jump-off point, it is not surprising that Mt. Maculot is one of the most frequently hiked Southern Tagalog Mountain. And because of this, its trail has become so used up that the locals have finally decided to open up a new trail.

"A new trail in Maculot, where?" - this was the question that bugged my mind, and probably Doc Gideon's as well, when we heard that a new trail has now been opened in Mt. Maculot. We became so curious with it that on the day that followed the night when we were just conversing about this new trail, we went to Cuenca, Batangas to check it out.

Written by Brian Jensen | Visit Las Vegas

The city of Las Vegas is known for numerous casinos that line the Strip as well as other areas of the city. Many people flock to the city each year to participate in casino gambling. Of the hundreds of casino that can be found in the city, certain ones are more popular than others. One of the most famous ones would be Bellagio Casino.

The Bellagio was designed to look like the Lake Como region Bellagio, an Italian city. One of the sites to see here include the Fountains of Bellagio which has multiple shows daily. A variety of casino games can be played at the Bellagio. For example, the poker room found here is famous and attracts many celebrities. It even includes a poker room with high stakes poker. The World Poker Tour has also been held multiple times at the Bellagio.

When visiting Vegas, another casino that should not be missed is the Wynn. One of the most popular Gaming Clubs in Vegas, the Wynn has many different casino games which mean visitors can find just the right game to suit their needs. Like the Bellagio, the Wynn also caters to high rollers. With its VIP player’s club, many skilled players gamble here.

While the Wynn and Bellagio have games that cater to high rollers, they also have extensive selections of slot machines. There are basically three types of slot machines. Two of these are distinguished by the number of reels in them. They include three reel and five reel slot machines. The advantage to playing a five reel machine over three is that more paylines can be created with additional chances to win. The third kind of slot machine is a progressive slot which means there is an additional jackpot that is paid out. A portion of each wager is added to this progressive jackpot which can get rather large.

Mt. Timbac | Too Fast, Not Furious

Two weeks after my epic mountain adventures in Mindanao, I needed to travel to the City of Pines to use an expiring hotel accommodation voucher. A trip too sudden without any plan gave me an idea to hike a Cordillera mountain which, for some reasons, I've never done before. Mt. Timbac (or Mt. Timbak or Mt. Singakalsa), the 3rd highest  in Luzon and 9th in the country, turned out to be my 36th mountain.

A one of a kind adventure, certainly an experience to be treasured.

This post discusses the second part of our Talomo-Apo Megatraverse, comprising days 3 and 4 - from the time we escaped the wilderness of Mt Talomo and reached Mt. Apo's Lake Venado, assaulted and set foot on the highest peak, and finally descended via the Kidapawan Trail.

Mt. Makiling (MakTrav) | Sipit Trail

I did MakTrav a number of times, five to be exact, but never did I try the Sipit Trail (San Felix jump off). All of my previous MakTravs were via the Palanggana Trail (San Bartolome jump off). That's why, just this morning, I went back to Mt. Makiling for another Sto. Tomas to UPLB traverse, walang kasawaan, but this time it was via the Sipit Trail.

Mt. Natib | Redeemed and Refreshed

And so, after 4 months, I went back to Mt. Natib, wishing for the clear summit view I never saw when I was there the first time. But hey, more than what I hoped for are a very nice waterfalls side trip and a batch of new hiker friends, a totally different awesome experience!

Mt. Marami | Storm and Clouds No More

There's a flood of about 3 inches deep inside our tent. We want to sleep but we can't, aargghh, it is my worst camping experience ever!
It was June of last year when we had this horrifying experience on Mt. Marami. We were so stormed and flooded during the night, and was clouded the next morning. Yes, without a doubt, it was my worst mountain camping experience, even up to this date, but even so, it is also one of my most favorite climbs of all time. (check out my first Mt. Marami experience in this link). Isn't it weird that sometimes our worst experiences are also our most favorite? Anyway, I made a promise to myself that I would one day return to this mountain for a redemption.

Finally, 7 months after that memorable Mt. Marami hike, the promise of redemption was put into action.

Mt. Makiling | Quick Traverse Day Hike

It's been four months since I last climbed Mt. Makiling and I truly miss its trails. That's why, when I heard that the mountain is now open again, and since all my scheduled hike for March 2 were postponed, I came to a decision that I'll do a quick Mt. Makiling Traverse dayhike.

Saturday - March 2, 2013

Yes it was quick, just 4 hours from Sto. Tomas to Agila Base! Well, that's the good thing in solo hiking, you'll be able to maximize your speed.

When I alighted the bus in front of Sto. Tomas Market, I noticed that Mt. Makiling was clearly visible.

Tayak Hill | Beyond the Cross and Windy Summit

As we descend the mountain considered by many as the devils' dwelling (check out my latest article on Mt. Cristobal Traverse), a grassy hill with white cross came into sight. From its summit, we heard sounds of laughter and loud voices, "ah, the people up there were having fun, is it a park or something?".

"Tayak Hill na po yan sir, pwedeng akyatin ng mga 30 minutes lang," our guide replied.

I honestly know nothing about this Tayak hill aside from it being windy, grassy and has a cross on top,  I'm totally clueless. Little did I know that beyond its windy summit with tall white cross is a piece of WW2 history.

Mt. Cristobal (CrisTrav) | Finishing the Unfinished Business

I can still remember the first time I ascended this mountain, it was March 26, 2012 (the day after I graduated from college). We were also on a quest to traverse this mountain but ended up not pursuing it because of an unexpected circumstance, parang kaming mga basang sisiw noon. You might want to check out that experience in this link: Mt. Cristobal Failed Traverse.

About 9 months have passed, and I, once again, faced the same mountain where, for the first time, I felt that I was defeated.

A Young Mountaineer's Reply to His Master

I can see your grin each time I mention a page in my book still too thin. It just shows that my stories compared to yours are nothing, like a dot in a broad white sheet, negligible. Your tales are far better, far more exciting, far more colorful, an epic. Nevertheless, you still lend me your ears, you listen, I see no sign of boredom, thank you for that sir.

But did I speak too much? Forgive me sir, for I cannot help myself from telling you my mountain adventures, I really can't. Nothing excites me more than sharing to you these adventure stories of mine. So if you aren't fed up yet, I have a lot more stories to tell, trail after trail, peak after peak, mountain after mountain.

Mt. Palay Palay (Pico de Loro) | Take Two

When I first climbed Pico de Loro last year (August 2012), I successfully fulfilled my dream of climbing the famous monolith.Yes, I felt gladness when I reached the top of this vertical rock, but even so, that gladness was not at its fullest. I need not to say why, just look at the picture below.

clouded and eerie
heartbreaking isn't it...

Panorama | Distribution of the Top 10 Highest Mountains in the Philippines

The top ten highest peaks in the Philippine archipelago are concentrated mainly on its two largest islands. Luzon Island, home of the grand Cordillera mountains, has the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 10th highest. While the rest, including the highest peak, are found in the island of Mindanao.

Mt. Apo, the highest in the country, is shown in this panorama. It was taken from the summit of Mt. Dulang Dulang (2nd), morning of January 26, 2013.

Mt. Purgatory | An Endless Moss and Pine Trail

Weeks before this climb, I got my mind set on climbing Mt. Daguldol as my year-ender slash first year anniversary climb (yes, isang taon na akong namumundok). Would've been so nice to return to my mother mountain exactly one year after. But my plans simply changed instantly when I received this message:
"Mt. Purgatory is set for dec 28-29. Budget is 2,000. Please confirm within the week. 10 slots only including me!
Another invitation from Pinoymountaineer which I just cannot decline.

Mindanao Mountain Madness

For 12 days, I was in Mindanao... scaling some of its beautiful mountains.. Inexplicable happiness I felt when I survived the notorious trails of Mt. Talomo, even happier when I summitted the 1st (Mt. Apo), 2nd (Mt. Dulang-Dulang) and 4th (Mt. Kitanglad) highest peaks in the country. A great treat for my 21st year.

Talomo-Apo Megatraverse

Day 1 - Manila to Davao to Brgy. Tamayong to Lumot Campsite

For about 12 hours, we dealt on a trail that was difficult and quite lengthy. Fallen trees, fallen trees and more, well, fallen trees. It was like a daylong obstacle course.

Packed and Ready | Mindanao 1-2-3

At last, my long wait will soon come to an end. In 4 days' time, I will fly to Mindanao and embark on a 12-day expedition on some of the highest mountains in the country - the mountains Apo, Dulang-Dulang and Kitanglad, (the first, second and fourth highest peaks in the Philippines).

Mindanao is the second largest island of the Philippines, where you have possibilities to explore tropical forest. Most tourists stay in a cheap hotel in Davao, the largest city in Mindanao. For those who seek adventure, the Island offers activities such as jungle tracking and climbing the highest mountain of the Philippines.

I already have my round trip plane tickets, all the necessary arrangements for the climbs are set (thanks to my friends for organizing the climbs: Jay for the Talomo-Apo MegaTraverse, and Agnes for the D2K Traverse), my 12-days worth of stuff are already packed in my 55L backpack. Basically, I am just waiting for the big day to finally come, hurrah I'm really really excited for this! I just hope the weather will cooperate.

Mt. Maculot (MacTrav) | From Grotto to Rockies

One week before this Mt. Maculot traverse dayhike, I joined Trail Adventours in their Twin Day Hikes in Laguna, and with us was the awesomest blogger behind Pinoymountaineer, Doc Gideon Lasco. While trekking the trail of Mt. Kalisungan, I had a little mountain talk with Doc.

My conversation with Doc Gideon of Pinoy Mountaineer:

Doc Gid: Hey Ivan, naka-ilang bundok ka na?
Me: 29 na Doc, pang-30 yung Mabilog mamaya...
Doc: Andami na rin ha... teka, hulaan ko yang mountains mo... Of course Pulag, Tapulao, Arayat, Batulao.. (and so on...)
Me: Hehe...
Doc: But have you summitted all these mountains?
Me: Ughhmm... well yung Mt. Maculot, Rockies pa lang.
Doc: Ay, wala na... 28 mountains ka pa lang. haha
Me: Haha
Doc: Don't worry, Maculot Rockies is still a summit itself..
Me: [napa-isip ng matagal]

One week after that talk with Doc Gideon, I found myself walking the streets of Cuenca, Batangas, heading to Mt. Maculot, and my goal that day was to finish my unfinished business - traverse the mountain and reach its summit.

Intramuros on a Major Makeover

It has been eight months now since I last visited Intramuros. After spending 4 long years of my college life in this walled city, I have developed a special attachment to it. Somehow, I'm starting to miss those moments in my life where I use to walk on its walls, stare at its aged buildings, and feel the antiquity of this former Spanish colonial capital.

This uneasy feeling made me want to revisit Intramuros the soonest possible. I want to see again the walled city 8 months after I left the place.
